BLOG#8 (Chapter 8, Module 8)

  • Why do we try to stay "looking young" for as long as possible? Why are we so concerned with the signs of ageing: getting grey hair, wrinkles, loose skin, etc?

I believe we ‘fear’ ageing because of the negative stigma society has placed on beauty. Firstly, we have a misconception as it relates to beauty. One is deemed beautiful if they remain physically fit and portray the image of a runway model 24-hours a day. Secondly, as women, we over consume ourselves with worry about getting grey hair, wrinkles, loose skin and such because we have chose to delay marriage until we have achieved ‘success’ status in our career. So we have our hair dyed every six weeks, have regular botox injections, contemplate tummy tucks, breast lifts and liposuction, not only for self-gratification, but to appear attractive to others. Lastly, some of us are just VAIN! Our latter years of life should be a time when we can sit back, reflect, enjoy and share with our loved ones about our life experiences…not a time regretting all the wasted attempts to delay the natural ageing process.

The common practice of keeping up appearances
with society is a mere selfish struggle of the vain with the vain.

Katie- I could not agree more. I also think that people seem to forget that beauty also comes from within. Someone can look like a model on the outside but if she or he is hateful, rude and negative about everything it can tarnish their image very quickly.

I personally want to have wrinkles when I get older from laughing and smiling too much (if that is possible- I do not think that a person can smile too much.) You understand what I am trying to say.

I totally agree with your opinion. It is really hard for many women to not be vain because of the images that are portrayed in the media. You have women like Demi Moore who have had several kids and who is over the age of forty with the face and body of a twenty year old. What people fail to realize is the fact that the media is fake and undergoing surgery to keep yourself looking young will make that person fake also.

I think you're on to something! I couldn't agree more that our society has placed a stigma on aging. It's amazing how vain we've become with just a few generations. Have you seen the new Dove campaign for real beauty? I think it's wonderful however I think it's a little disheartening that we have allowed the control of deciding what is beautiful to be taken from us. Why did we ever give it away? My favorite photographs I've ever seen are elders in Native American tribes. If their, wrinkled, imperfect skin could tell a story what would it say? Beauty lies within everything, we just have to know where to find it!
I also wanted to say that I loved the picture and quote! They really added a nice touch to your blog!

You can always look at someone and see how cute they are be if their personality stinks then the inside and outside stinks. Socitey has made it to were beauty is only what is on the outside. Looking young will get us some jobs so people do whatever they can to perserve their youth. Beauty is also within not just on the outside but also on the inside.
